DIY Lavender Sugar Scrub (With Clary Sage)

This homemade DIY lavender sugar scrub is made with simple ingredients, is great for dry skin, and is an excellent homemade gift.

Why Make DIY Lavender Sugar Scrub

As someone who has always been fascinated by the power of nature to nurture our skin, I came across a secret to radiant skin: a DIY lavender and clary sage scrub. This homemade sugar scrub is fantastic for your skin and your mood!

My love for DIY beauty products began when I started questioning the ingredients in commercial skincare products. As I delved into natural remedies, lavender and clary sage caught my attention. These two aromatic herbs are not only known for their enchanting scents but also for their skincare benefits, including helping balance hormones.

The allure of the lavender and clary sage scrub lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. Unlike store-bought products loaded with synthetic chemicals, this scrub is a pure concoction of natural ingredients. The calming fragrance of lavender coupled with the earthy notes of clary sage creates a spa-like experience right in the comfort of your home.

With its stress-relieving properties, Lavender transforms my skincare routine into a soothing ritual. The aromatic essence of clary sage adds a touch of tranquility, making this scrub not just about physical exfoliation but also a mental retreat.

The affordability is another great benefit of DIY homemade lavender and brown sugar scrub. You can make it for a fraction of the price of a store-bought one. Ingredients are simple, and you can find them all in teh grocery store.

I have been making my DIY body scrub as a body exfoliator for many years, and I LOVE it.

I use it while I shower on most of my body besides my face (it is too harsh for the face). I like to use gentle exfoliation on my face.

It removes all the dead skin cells, and my skin feels silky and smooth when I’m done. I create a little spa routine by soaking my whole body in magnesium, essential oils, vitamin C powder, and baking soda in the tub and then scrubbing it with the scrub.

Health Benefits for The Skin

Gentle Exfoliation

One of the primary reasons I adore this scrub is its exfoliating prowess. The combination of sugar or salt (depending on your preference) with dried lavender flowers and clary sage gently buffs away dead skin cells, leaving behind a smooth and radiant complexion.

Hydration Boost

Including natural oils like jojoba or coconut oil in the scrub ensures my skin stays hydrated. These oils mimic the skin’s natural sebum, preventing it from becoming dry or overly oily.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Lavender and clary sage are renowned for their anti-inflammatory properties. This makes the scrub a go-to solution for soothing irritated skin, reducing redness, and calming any inflammation caused by environmental stressors.

Stress Relief and Relaxation

Beyond the physical benefits, the aromatherapeutic qualities of lavender and clary sage contribute to stress relief. A calming scrub rejuvenates the skin and provides a moment of relaxation in our hectic lives.

What Kind of Sugars Can I Use in Sugar Scrub?

As far as sugar is concerned, decide what texture you’d like, which will determine what kind of sugar you use.

I like to use brown sugar because it is much softer and gentler than regular organic cane sugar, but you are welcome to experiment with white sugar and see which one you like better.

Use organic ingredients because you put them all over the body, and the skin absorbs everything quickly.

What Oils To Use in Sugar Scrub?

My favorite oil for sugar scrubs is coconut oil. It’s solid at room temperature and makes the scrub creamier. I also love how it smells.

Using a neutral (or pleasant) smelling oil is ideal. Avocado, jojoba, almond oil, and light olive oil are good options.

What Salt To Use

I recommend using medium coarse salt that will help with scrubbing and detoxifying. Himalayan or Celtic salt is best because it has many more minerals that help detoxify the skin.

Benefits of Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary sage is excellent for women’s hormones. Clary sage is renowned for its estrogen-mimicking properties, making it a popular choice in aromatherapy for women.

For women experiencing hormonal fluctuations, especially during menstruation or menopause, clary sage can provide relief. Its ability to mimic estrogen helps balance hormone levels, potentially alleviating symptoms such as mood swings and hot flashes.

Clary sage has also been linked to emotional well-being. It has soothing properties, and it is believed to have antidepressant properties, offering comfort during emotionally challenging times.

Benefits of Lavender

Lavender is a versatile herb that offers a range of benefits, mainly when used in skincare and aromatherapy.

Lavender is known for its soothing and calming properties.  Inhaling essential oil or using lavender-based products can help reduce stress and anxiety and promote relaxation.

The calming effects of lavender extend to promoting better sleep. Using lavender essential oil in a diffuser or applying it to your pillow may help improve sleep quality and alleviate insomnia.

Lavender possesses anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in soothing irritated skin. It can be used to alleviate conditions like sunburn, insect bites, and minor skin irritations.

Lavender contains antioxidants that help protect the skin from free radicals. These antioxidants contribute to anti-aging effects by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Lavender has natural antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, effectively preventing and treating acne. It can also be used to cleanse wounds and promote healing.

How to Make the Perfect DIY Lavender and Clary Sage Scrub

Ingredients

Sugar or Salt

The base of the scrub, sugar or salt, serves as the primary exfoliating agent. Choose fine granules for a gentler scrub or coarse ones for a more intense exfoliation.

Dried Lavender Flowers

Dried lavender flowers add a burst of color and the calming aroma of lavender. They contribute to the gentle exfoliation and infuse the scrub with natural goodness.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Known for its earthy and herbaceous scent, clary sage essential oil perfectly complements lavender. A few drops of this oil elevate the scrub, providing both aromatherapy benefits and skincare advantages.

Carrier Oil (Jojoba, Coconut, or Sweet Almond)

A carrier oil is essential for moisturizing the skin. Coconut oil is my personal favorite due to its similarity to the skin’s natural oils.

Vitamin E Oil (Optional)

Add a few drops of vitamin E oil to boost skin-nourishing goodness. This antioxidant helps protect the skin from free radicals, promoting a youthful glow.

Instructions

Mixing the Base: Mix the sugar or salt with the dried lavender flowers in a bowl. Adjust the ratio based on your desired level of exfoliation.

Adding Oils: Introduce the chosen carrier oil and clary sage essential oil to the mix. Stir the ingredients until they form a consistent, slightly moist texture.

Optional Vitamin E Boost: If you opt for vitamin E oil, now is the time to add it. Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure even distribution.

Storage: Transfer your scrub into an airtight container. Store it in a cool, dark place to preserve its freshness.

What if My Sugar Scrub Separates?

No need to panic. It’s not a big deal.

If your sugar scrub happens to separate, there’s no need to fret. It’s a common occurrence, even in many commercial body scrubs. This separation can occur more frequently if you store your homemade scrub in the shower. But fear not, it’s perfectly safe to use. Simply give it a good mix with your finger before applying it.

How to Store It

I use a small mason jar. I do not use plastic containers for anything because they contain too many toxic ingredients. I store it in a cool, dark place to preserve its freshness.

Smaller jars are also great if you want to give them to someone as a gift. I like to put them in gift baskets for my friends, and I tie a piece of cute ribbon or baker twine around them. They are expensive gifts but extra special because you made them.

As with any skincare product, it’s crucial to perform a patch test to ensure compatibility with your skin. Embrace the beauty of nature, indulge in the tranquility of lavender and clary sage, and treat yourself to a radiant glow that goes beyond skin deep.

In making my own DIY lavender and clary sage scrub, I’ve found a skincare gem a therapeutic ritual, and so much fun that addresses both physical and emotional well-being. The power of the ingredients, coupled with the enchanting aromas, has transformed my daily skincare routine into a self-care experience. This easy lavender sugar scrub will not disappoint! After using this lavender body scrub, your skin will feel rejuvenated and soft. We all need a little pampering!
