Creamy Roasted Sweet Potato Pear Soup
Certain flavors immediately take me somewhere else.
For me, juicy pears are one of them. Bartlett pears, especially when they are perfectly ripe and dripping with juice, remind me of Poland. Some of my favorite childhood food memories involve fruit that was simple, seasonal, and incredibly flavorful. We didn’t need much. A beautiful pear with honey, eaten over the kitchen sink because it was so juicy you couldn’t possibly eat it politely, was dessert enough.
I like to make soups with pears, but I wanted to add a fall vegetable, and sweet potato came to mind. I wanted the soup to taste like pear, soft, fragrant sweetness that could balance the earthy sweetness of roasted sweet potatoes. Fall soups are the best and can be so creative!
The soup is creamy without needing a lot of cream, light, and it has that lovely earthy balance of savory and sweet that I love in a good fall soup.
As a nutrition consultant and chef, I’m always looking for ways to make simple seasonal ingredients do more work on the plate. This soup is a perfect example.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
I think soup should taste like the season it belongs to. And this one tastes like fall.
Roasting the sweet potatoes first gives them caramelized edges and a deeper flavor than simply boiling them. The pears soften and become wonderfully fragrant, while ginger adds a little warmth. Thyme brings an earthy note, and just a splash of balsamic vinegar wakes everything up at the end.
That last part is important.
I tested this soup several ways, and I found that without acidity, the soup could become a little too sweet. The balsamic vinegar doesn’t make it taste like vinegar. It simply brings all the flavors into focus.
I made this soup vegan but you can add cream or sourcream if you want.
Why This Recipe Works
The magic here is contrast.
The sweet potatoes are earthy and caramelized. The pears are juicy, floral, and naturally sweet. Onion and garlic bring savory depth. Ginger adds warmth, thyme adds an herbal note, and balsamic vinegar gives the whole thing a little lift.
And roasting matters.
I am firmly in the camp that says if you have an extra 25 minutes, roast your vegetables for soup. Boiling is practical, but roasting creates flavor. Those browned edges are where the good stuff happens.

Did you know?
Pears are one of the few fruits that actually ripen from the inside out? That’s why a pear can feel firm when you buy it but suddenly become perfectly juicy and soft a few days later.

How to Make Creamy Roasted Sweet Potato Pear Soup
- Preheat the oven to 425°F.
- Cube the sweet potatoes and place them on a baking sheet (no need to peel them). Toss them with a little olive oil and roast until tender and browned around the edges, about 25–30 minutes.
- While the sweet potatoes are roasting, sauté the onion in a large pot with olive oil until soft and translucent. Add the garlic, ginger, and thyme and cook for another minute.
- Chop the pears. Add them to the pot along with the roasted sweet potatoes.
- Pour in the vegetable stock and bring everything to a gentle simmer. Let it cook for about 30 minutes.
- Add salt, red pepper flakes, and turmeric, then blend until completely smooth. I use an immersion blender or VitaMix.
- Finally, stir in the balsamic vinegar. Taste before adding more salt. You want the soup to taste balanced, not overly sweet.
Ingredient Substitutions
- Sweet potatoes – You can use butternut squash or pumpkin, although the flavor will be slightly different.
- Bartlett pears – Bosc or Anjou pears work well. Choose pears that are ripe but not mushy.
- Vegetable stock – Chicken stock or bone broth can be used if you don’t need the soup to be vegetarian.
- Fresh ginger – Ground ginger works in a pinch, but fresh ginger gives a much brighter flavor.
- Thyme – Fresh sage or rosemary can be used, but use them lightly because they have stronger personalities.
- Balsamic vinegar – Apple cider vinegar works beautifully if that’s what you have.
Recipe Testing Notes
I learned one important thing while testing this recipe: don’t overdo the pear.
It can be tempting to add more because pears are delicious, but the goal is soup, not pear purée. The sweet potato needs to remain the main character while the pear adds brightness and fragrance.

I also found that roasting the sweet potatoes until they have some browned edges makes a noticeable difference. Pale roasted sweet potatoes will work, but those caramelized edges give the finished soup much more personality.
And don’t skip the balsamic vinegar. Taste the soup before and after adding it. You’ll understand immediately.
Ways To Serve
- With a fall kale salad or stir in a cashew sauce.
- With crusty sourdough, gluten-free artisan bread, or seed crackers.
- With chopped Kohlrabi salad, or pomegranate and apple salad.
- With kale and Brussels sprouts salad, gluten-free naan bread, gluten-free sandwich bread, or high-protein seed bread.

Make-Ahead Tips
This is one of those recipes I actually prefer to make ahead.
The flavors settle together as the soup sits, and it reheats beautifully. Make a pot on Sunday, and you’ll have an easy lunch waiting for you during the week.
If you are meal prepping, let the soup cool completely before transferring it to airtight containers.
Troubleshooting
- My soup is too sweet: Add another small splash of balsamic vinegar and a little more salt. Acid and salt are your best friends here.
- My soup is too thick: Add vegetable stock a little at a time until it reaches the consistency you want.
- My soup tastes flat: It probably needs more salt or acidity. Add them gradually and taste after each addition.
- My soup isn’t creamy enough: Blend it longer. A high-powered blender will give you an especially silky texture. You can also add a splash of coconut milk if you want it richer.
Storage
Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. This soup freezes beautifully for up to 3 months. Warm gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of stock or water if needed.
