Refreshing Dragon Fruit Lavender Gin Cocktail

I often hear from friends and clients how hard it is to find a fun cocktail that doesn’t feel heavy or full of artificial flavors. Dry gin with fresh ingredients and a homemade lavender syrup keeps things natural. Its lovely flavor pairs perfectly with garden parties, light lunch spreads, or even just as a treat for yourself. I love making delicious summer recipes that everybody can enjoy!

I’ll walk you through making lavender syrup in a small saucepan, share tips for serving in a coupe glass or cocktail glass, and offer smart swaps and nutrition tips to make your perfect cocktail even more enjoyable. If you enjoy fresh herbs or want to impress with a vibrant, edible-flowers garnish, you’ll love this refreshing cocktail for your next gathering or holiday brunch!

So, on one summer evening last year, I hosted a garden party that begged for something more than sparkling water and wine. I wanted a fun cocktail with a twist—something bright, light, and functional. Dragon fruit had just arrived at my local grocery store, and my lavender bush was in full bloom. Inspiration struck. A beautiful lavender gin sour? Yes, but with a tropical upgrade.

The Dragon Fruit Lavender Gin Cocktail became the star of the show, winning hearts (and star ratings!) from guests at my potluck. Its floral notes of lavender paired perfectly with the exotic vibe of dragon fruit and the indigo hues of Empress gin. Instagram-worthy? Definitely. TikTok-make-worthy? Absolutely.

People often ask how I come up with cocktail recipes that are both fun and better for you. As someone who wears both a chef’s jacket and a nutritionist badge, I know that what you pour into your glass can make a real difference—especially when you want something light, vibrant, and full of natural ingredients. My approach is shaped by years in both nutrition counseling and the kitchen, where every recipe is not just about flavor, but also about feeling good the next day.

Make or Buy Lavender and Dragon Fruit Simple Syrup?

Lavender simple syrup is easy to find at well-stocked specialty markets or online, so you can either make it or buy it depending on your time and preference. Making it at home does give you more control over the flavor and sweetness.

Dragon fruit simple syrup, on the other hand, is rarely available commercially—it’s not something you’ll typically find at a liquor store or grocery store. Because of that, it’s best to make it yourself using fresh or frozen dragon fruit. It’s simple to do and gives you that vibrant color and subtle tropical flavor you won’t get from store-bought options.

For another cocktail option, try this St. Germain Cocktail, one of my favorites. It’s light, refreshing, and fun!

Did you know?

Oh, Empress 1908 Indigo Gin? She’s not just a pretty face in a purple bottle—she’s basically the unicorn of the gin world.

Here’s what makes her fabulously fascinating:

🌸 It’s Naturally Indigo—Thanks to Butterfly Pea Blossom

No artificial dyes here! The stunning indigo hue comes from butterfly pea flower, a botanical known for its natural deep blue pigment. It’s also used in herbal teas and traditional medicine in Southeast Asia.

It Changes Color With Citrus

Here’s the party trick: add citrus (like lemon or lime), and that deep indigo transforms into soft lavender or pink right before your eyes. This magical pH reaction makes every cocktail look like an interactive art project.

How to Make Dragon Fruit Lavender Gin Cocktail

  • Make Dragon Fruit Syrup: Over medium heat, combine dragon fruit puree, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Stir until sugar dissolves. Let simmer for 5 minutes, then fine strain and cool to room temperature. Store in an airtight container.
  • Make Lavender Syrup: Combine water, sugar, and lavender flowers in a small saucepan. Simmer over low heat until sugar dissolves. Steep for 10 minutes. Fine strain and cool. Store in an airtight container.
  • Shake It Up: Add gin, syrups, lemon juice, and lime juice to a cocktail shaker. Fill with fresh ice. Shake well (or dry shake first if using egg white for foam).
  • Serve: Fine strain into a chilled cocktail glass or coupe glass. Garnish with a lemon twist, lavender sprig, or dragon fruit slice.
  • Optional Fizz: Top with soda water or bubbly prosecco for a refreshing cocktail twist.

Chef Angie’s Tips

  • Always let syrups cool to room temperature before mixing.
  • Use a fine-mesh sieve for crystal-clear syrups.
  • A coupe glass enhances the aromatic floral notes of lavender.
  • Keep ingredients chilled and ice fresh for best results.
  • For stronger lavender flavor, steep flowers longer—but don’t overdo it.
  • Choose dry gin for its clean, botanical profile and lower sugar load.
  • Keep the lavender syrup portion modest; you can always adjust to taste.
  • Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or fresh lime juice for brightness and vitamin C.
  • Drop in fresh herbs or edible flowers (like lavender or rosemary) to punch up both nutrition and eye appeal.
  • Skip heavy cream or extra sugar in favor of light, fresh flavor.

Ways to Serve
