Sea Buckthorn Juice
Growing up in Poland, I spent many autumns foraging for wild berries with my family. Sea buckthorn fruit, known locally as rokitnik was a popular berry because of its great health benfits. These tiny, golden-orange wonderful berries were a staple of our seasonal rituals, plucked carefully from thorny shrubs. While the experience of picking them was often prickly and painstaking, the reward—a tart and vibrant sea buckthorn juice—was well worth it. Today, this humble berry is celebrated worldwide for its health benefits and versatility in natural products.
What is Sea Buckthorn
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is a small, bright orange berry known for its incredible nutritional value and tart, citrusy flavor. Also called Siberian pineapple, sandthorn, or seaberry, this superfruit thrives in coastal and mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, particularly in Russia, China, and parts of Eastern Europe. Used for centuries in traditional medicine, sea buckthorn is prized for its high vitamin C content, omega-7 fatty acids, and powerful antioxidants.
Beyond its use in juice, sea buckthorn is incorporated into teas, jams, oils, cosmetics, and even savory sauces, making it a versatile ingredient with global appeal.

Health Benefits Of Sea Buckthorn Juice
- Sea buckthorn juice is rich in vitamin C, it has a significantly higher content than most other fruits, even oranges, supporting a healthy immune system and combating oxidative stress. As a child, I didn’t understand the science behind its benefits, but I knew it kept us healthy and energized during the colder months. Now, I appreciate how sea buckthorn juice works to protect the human body from free radicals and supports heart health and collagen production.
- The juice is also an omega-7 powerhouse, a rare essential fatty acid that aids cardiovascular support, supports healthy skin, and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Clinical trials have shown that Hippophae rhamnoides, the scientific name for sea buckthorn, has unmatched health benefits, including reducing high blood pressure and improving cardiovascular diseases. These distinctive differences make it a prized health supplement across Europe and North America.
- Sea buckthorn juice is rich in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and carotenoids, contributing to its antioxidant properties. These compounds reduce oxidative stress, which weakens the immune system and accelerates aging. Sea buckthorn juice helps maintain a robust and balanced immune response by combating oxidative stress.
- The fatty acids in sea buckthorn juice, including omega-3, omega-6, and the rare omega-7, play a vital role in modulating the immune system. These fatty acids support cell membranes’ integrity, ensuring immune cells function optimally. It has anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical trials have also shown that sea buckthorn’s bioactive compounds can help regulate inflammatory responses, protecting the body from chronic inflammation that may weaken immunity over time.

How to Make Sea Buckthorn Juice
Ingredients:
- Fresh or frozen sea buckthorn berries
- Filtered water
- Optional: Honey, maple syrup, or apple juice for sweetness
Instructions:
- Prepare the Berries: If using fresh berries, rinse them thoroughly. If using frozen, let them thaw slightly.
- Blend: Juice the berries. I used masticating juice because it turns at a much slower speed and keeps heat and oxidation to a minimum. But you could also use a blender with a small amount of water (about 1 cup per 2 cups of berries). Blend until smooth.
- Strain: Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the seeds and pulp if you are using the blender. With a Juicer, you do not have to do that.
- Sweeten (Optional): Stir in honey or maple syrup to taste. Some prefer the juice unsweetened for its bold, tangy flavor.
- Dilute (Optional): If the juice is too strong, dilute with water or mix with other fruit juices like apple or orange for a balanced taste.
- Serve & Store: Enjoy immediately or refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Tip: To prevent juice separation, stir before drinking or shake well if stored in a bottle.

How to Preserve Sea Buckthorn Juice
- Refrigeration: Fresh juice lasts up to 3 days in a sealed glass jar.

Alternative Uses for Sea Buckthorn
- Teas & Infusions: Steep dried or fresh berries in hot water for a vitamin-rich tea.
